Lone Peak OT Austin Pay, a top recruit in the state, commits to BYU

PROVO – Austin Pay remains loyal to the family business.

The Lone Peak offensive tackle showed his commitment to BYU during a live show Saturday afternoon on 247Sports, picking the school where his father Garry and brothers Connor and Trevor play.

Ranked as the No. 38 offensive tackle nationally and No. 3 overall in Utah by 247Sports, Pay chose the Cougars over the bottom three, which included Oklahoma and Oregon. He visited BYU on June 21, shortly after taking a trip to Oregon, and recently completed a visit to Oklahoma on October 19.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound offensive lineman also had interest from Arkansas, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Utah before narrowing it down to his final three players before Saturday's final unveiling.

“It's been a crazy ride to see what they've been through,” Pay told 247Sports, noting new offensive line coach TJ Woods' role in recruiting and helping the Cougars to an 8-0 start and No. 9 ranking in the Associated rankings Press Top 25. “I think the hiring of coach Woods was a big help for the O-line. Since he got there, the offensive production has increased tremendously and they are now 8-0.”

Despite his legacy with the Cougars, Pay took a patient approach to his recruitment, even noting at times that he might choose a different path than his parents and siblings before him while starting every game since his freshman season at Lone Peak. He also attended the National Combine in San Antonio earlier this year, where he began to attract even more national interest.

“I think that choosing your major is such an important decision in your life, so I was in no hurry to make a decision,” said Pay, who plans to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Saints before enrolling Last days to meet Provo. “I wanted to check all the boxes and make sure I knew where I wanted to go.”

But the decision ultimately fell on BYU, with the Ducks and Sooners making a late push to reel in his commitment to the tackle who has experience playing across the offensive line.

“Right now I see myself as a tackle and getting there,” Pay said. “But I’m ready to play wherever they need me so we can win football games.”

“I’m a guy that works hard, is very aggressive and goes after some D-linemen.”
