The polls aren't open yet, but that doesn't mean voting hasn't started yet.

Waynesboro recorded 5,152 early voters and 1,195 absentee ballots. Compared to 2020, in-person voting increased by about 100 voters, while the number of mail-in ballots fell significantly, totaling 2,906 in 2020.

Jeffers reminded voters to bring ID and vote at their precinct's polling place, especially if they are casting a registration vote on the same day. For those who are registered, your polling place can be found using the Virginia Department of Elections polling place locator.

About 17,300 Augusta County residents participated in early voting. That's about 1,000 more than in the 2020 presidential election and about a third of all voters in Augusta County. Victor, chairman of the Augusta County Board of Elections, said the percentage of voters who have already cast their ballots should ease the burden on people voting today.

Ludlum wanted to thank the employees who conducted early voting in the county. With assistance from the Augusta County Sheriff's Office, polls were open for 45 days without incident. Ludlum said he is generally concerned that something could happen as election incidents are reported across the country, but Augusta County has no specific reason for concern.

Staunton Chancellor Christi Linhoss also hoped for a smooth election day and encouraged everyone: “Be respectful, be kind to workers and show up!”

In Staunton, 5,868 voters turned out to vote early. The registry office received 1,280 fully completed postal ballot papers. There were 50 mail-in ballots that were returned unused, 40 were returned undelivered and there are still about 280 waiting to be returned or mailed tomorrow.
