York County District Attorney Dave Sunday, a Republican, beat former Comptroller Eugene DePasquale to become Pennsylvania's top prosecutor, according to the Associated Press.

It once seemed like Republicans had a firm grip on the office, but before Sunday's victory, Democrats had won three straight elections.

Sunday, a Marine veteran, highlighted his experience as a prosecutor in the campaign against Democrat DePasquale. The attorney general oversees hundreds of lawyers.

The vacancy occurred because Attorney General Michelle Henry did not seek election after being appointed to serve the current governor's final two years in office. Josh Shapiro's unexpired term. Shapiro is a Democrat.

Sunday vowed to “enforce and defend Pennsylvania's abortion laws” and argued during a debate that there was “no scenario” in which he would prosecute a woman for having an abortion. Many of Sunday's Republican supporters favor an abortion ban, and DePasquale had noted that Republican state lawmakers were trying to push through a constitutional amendment saying it did not guarantee rights related to abortion or public funding of abortion.

Sunday said he supports the death penalty in the “saddest, most tragic and most horrific cases.”
