Las Vegas Raiders are thinking about the future ahead of the NFL trade deadline

Las Vegas Raiders are thinking about the future ahead of the NFL trade deadline

Raise your hand if you've heard this story before. The Las Vegas Raiders got off to a strong start before completely imploding.

That was the case again on Sunday afternoon, at home against the conference rival Pittsburgh Steelers.

Antonio Pierce's team played in front of a fairly large crowd and took a 7-3 lead in the first quarter. Alexander Mattison's three-yard touchdown run capped a 70-yard drive by recently installed starting quarterback Aidan O'Connell.

From then on, things went completely downhill for the Silver and Black. Pittsburgh would score 26 consecutive points before a garbage-time touchdown for the Raiders. The end result was a 32-13 loss and a 2-4 season record.

Losses of turnovers and penalties doomed the Raiders in this game. Penalties negated a touchdown from Aidan O'Connell to Alexander Mattison and an interception from Divine Deablo.

“It starts with discipline. We had four penalties, but they were at critical moments. The ball loss thing is embarrassing. We don't respect the ball enough, so we don't even deserve the chance to put ourselves in a position to win.” Antonio Pierce told reporters after the loss, via the Raiders' official website: “We talked about the first drive, What's the score?”

The Raiders committed three turnovers for the second straight game, leading to 17 Steelers points. That was pretty much all she wrote about an ugly 19-point home loss for Vegas.

Where do the Raiders go now that this appears to be a lost season for the organization? What changes could come?

Las Vegas Raiders must sell before NFL trade deadline

At 2-4 on the season, things aren't looking good for the Raiders. They face the Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals before a bye in Week 10. Interestingly, this farewell falls the same week as the NFL trade deadline on November 5th.

We know that Davante Adams is in the trade and will likely be traded here in the next three weeks. He hasn't played since Week 3 against the Carolina Panthers and has since told the Raiders' brass that he prefers to be subbed. General Manager Tom Telesco is working with other teams to make this a reality.

In addition to Adams, there are a number of veterans the Raiders could trade to build for the future. Realistically, this is simply not a playoff-caliber team. Depending on what happens over the course of the above three games, there could be a major roster shake-up.

Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, guard Cody Whitehair, running back Alexander Mattison, defensive tackle John Jenkins and linebacker Robert Spillane are names to keep an eye on. Each could secure a mid-round pick for Vegas, increasing his NFL Draft capital.

One player we know won't be moved is star edge rusher Maxx Crosby. His name came up in connection with the Detroit Lions after they lost Aidan Hutchinson for the season due to a serious lower-body injury.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared on the Pat McAfee Show Monday, clearly showing that the Raiders will not move their star pass rusher under any circumstances.

Crosby is a clear building block. The same goes for rookie tight end Brock Bowers. That being said, the Raiders don't have the proven young talent that could accelerate a rebuild.

Now it's time to think long-term in southern Nevada. The talent vacuum on this Raiders roster is real. It starts at the quarterback position, of course, but also extends to the entire roster.

Vegas begins Week 7 against the Rams, who are ranked 27th in both scoring and points allowed. It is outscored by an average of nine points per game. It just wasn't good enough in all aspects of the game.

“We just have to go back and get to work,” Pierce said. “It’s very cliché, but it’s true. … Our record is what it shows, we are 2-4. That's not good enough. We don't train well enough, we don't play well enough and we're not detailed enough.

That's the understatement of the season.
