In a presidential race fraught with uncertainty, one outcome seemed preordained: that Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, would win Vermont.

The Green Mountain State was no surprise.

On Tuesday at 7 p.m. — just as the polls were closing — the Associated Press called the state for Harris.

With only three of 538 votes in the Electoral College, Vermont had little ability to influence the outcome of the election.

The state is nothing if it is not consistent. Since Republican George HW Bush defeated Democrat Michael Dukakis in 1988, it has gone to the Democratic candidate in every presidential election. In recent cycles, the Democratic candidate has won at least 55% of the vote.

Harris even received the support of Vermont's Republican Gov. Phil Scott, who told reporters outside his Berlin polling station late Tuesday afternoon that he had cast his vote for the Democratic candidate.
