Jason Kelce talks about the incident with a football fan who called Travis an insult

Jason Kelce is speaking out about the altercation between him and a football fan who called his brother Travis Kelce a homophobic slur.

“I'm not happy with anything that happened. I’m not proud of it,” the 36-year-old retired Philadelphia Eagles player said at the start Monday night countdown on ESPN. “In the midst of a heated moment, I decided to meet hate with hate, and I don't think that's a productive thing to do. I don’t think it leads to a discourse.”

“In that moment, I fell to a level I shouldn’t have,” Jason continued. “The bottom line is that I try to live my life according to the golden rules. I was always taught that. I try to treat people with decency and respect. I will continue to do that in the future.”

He ended his statement by telling viewers: “We have to concentrate on one game. A duel. I don’t think this is the platform to necessarily go into that.”

On Saturday, November 2nd, Jason attended the Ohio State-Penn State football game at Beaver Stadium in State College, Pennsylvania.

In footage circulating on X, formerly known as Twitter, fans gathered around Jason as he walked to the stadium, amid some heckling. While the person filming tried to shove his fist at Jason, another man close behind the former football star shouted the insult.

“Hey, Kelce. “How does it feel that your brother is dating Taylor Swift?” the man shouted at Jason. The insult was used to describe Travis, who has been dating the 34-year-old singer since 2023.

Jason quickly turned around, grabbed the man's phone and forcefully threw it to the ground. Then the former Philadelphia Eagles star picked up the phone and walked away.

Another video, apparently filmed after the altercation, showed the football fan trying to retrieve his phone. Jason, who went first, said, “Who the hell is it now?”

“It looked like a Penn State student was looking at Kelce’s face for no reason,” the first X user captioned the video. “Wild scene in State College.”

Jason was at the game – in which the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Nittany Lions 20-13 – for an appearance on ESPN College game day.

PEOPLE reached out to a representative for both Jason and ESPN following the incident but did not immediately receive a response.
