Jack Flaherty delivers 7 shutouts as lineup delivers complete performance – Dodgers Digest

Aside from the Mets themselves, perhaps the Dodgers' biggest challenge heading into Game 1 was not to repeat 2021 and let the NLDS win over the Padres eclipse and emerge just as focused for the NLCS.

Things started well as the Dodgers took an early lead in the first game and continued to build on it as the game progressed and were given time to do so Jack FlahertyThe best start as a Dodger came at the right time.

They got things going late when things turned into a blowout in a 9-0 shutout win over the Mets.

Coming back from an injury Kodai Senga Started Game 1 for the Mets against the Phillies essentially as the opener, throwing just 31 pitches in two innings. He was relatively effective in this game, but fortunately he struggled today.

After Senga caught Ohtani, he walked two batters in a row Mookie Betts, Freddie FreemanAnd Teoscar Hernandez. Unfortunately, Will Smith jumped out on the first pitch (crazy decision) to put the rally on the brink, but Max Muncy came up big with a single up the middle that brought in Betts and a limping Freeman for a 2-0 lead.

After a wild pitch, two were in scoring position Enrique Hernándezbut Senga got him to hit a comebacker to end the threat.

In the 2nd, Senga continued to struggle to walk Gavin Lux on five pitches. After a ball too Tommy EdmanHe made a great sacrifice, although given his difficulties it seemed like a good chance of getting some. Whatever the case, it worked in the end as Ohtani hit the ball hard into the ground with a single to make it 3-0.

That was the end of the road for Senga, as Reed Garrett came in and got a lineout beforehand Francisco Alvarez threw Ohtani out on a steal attempt (his first in forever).

Garrett then gave up a single to start the third, but got two outs before giving up David Petersonwho got a strikeout to end the frame. He moved on in the 4th, and in a potentially good sign for the rest of the series, the Dodgers got him. Enrique Hernandez singled, Gavin Lux batted the left-handed hitter so he grounded out a ball, and then Edman hit a single to score Enrique and make it 4-0. It didn't mean that for long as Ohtani got into the lane and smacked a ball off the wall to right for Edman to single and advance to second on an error that made it 5-0. After a groundout by Mookie, Freddie came through with an ankle and hit Ohtani to make it 6-0.

Peterson was able to avoid a leadoff walk in the 5th to end his outing, but it was a positive sign for the bats.

Luckily, on the other hand, there were no updates as nothing happened.

In his playoff debut for the Dodgers, Jack Flaherty was mediocre and got into emotional arguments Manny Machado. Today he was in control of everything and managed to get through the first nine batters, retiring them all.

Things weren't so easy in the fourth as he issued a four-pitch walk to start. He recovered with a pair of outs, but then issued another walk to put up a pair. Fortunately, Starling Marte He narrowly missed one on a wide flyout to right to end that threat.

Flaherty then had to come out a bit in the 5th as he gave up two consecutive singles Jesse Winker And Jose Iglesiasbut for some reason Winker couldn't reach third and Enrique hit him with a throw back and they were given an out.

What looked like a potential rally for the Mets disintegrated in just two more pitches as consecutive flyouts ended the frame. That got Jack back on track, as he followed with a 10-pitch 6th that ended with a Teoscar catch.

Flaherty capped it off with a flawless 12-pitch inning in the seventh, aided by Kevin Kiermaier He made a good play after coming on in defense.

Dave Roberts has the career year so far in the payouts.

They desperately needed Flaherty to go deep to create the best Game 2 situation, and he did just that and more: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 98 pitches.

After Peterson got out after the 5th, that was it Danny Young for the Mets pen in the 6th, resulting in a clean 11-pitch inning. He continued in the 7th, got one out and issued a walk beforehand Jose Butto stepped in and got the last two outs on eight pitches.

Butto continued and struggled in the 8th. Again it was Enrique who led the way with a single, then Kiermaier got on base with one Pete Alonso Throwing error. After Edman tackled the line, Ohtani ran four straight balls to get the ball going, then Mookie unloaded her with a double to left for a 9-0 lead.

Chris Taylor continued to bat with a groundout and Teoscar then struck out to close the at-bats' tally.

More than enough.

For the Dodgers, the pen only needed two innings, and Daniel Hudson I had some difficulty starting the 8th. He started with a walk to Iglesias, gave up a lineout and then a single to Alvarez. However, he beat the top of the leaderboard with a lineout and a strikeout.

Finishing things off with a big lead was Ben Casparius makes his playoff debut. He got a pair of pop outs and then a strikeout to close the door.

The NLCS is now 1-0 against the Dodgers. Great start, but just one game.

Since the ALCS begins tomorrow and Monday Night Football exists, the next game in the series will be played on a Monday at 10:08 a.m./1:08 p.m. PT/4:08 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on FOX and FS1. It will be against it Sean Manaeawho the Dodgers have hit well over the course of his career, but he has taken a step forward for the Mets and represents one of their biggest challenges in the series. Given Flaherty's performance, it should be a letter game Landon Knack strongly pronounced.
