I remember when Northern Colorado was a little smaller and more picturesque and we first broadcast traffic reports on the radio station. This happened before we actually had any real traffic to report.

You can always expect I-25 to reverse around the Harmony exits. The prospect of getting anywhere near downtown was always difficult. There was always a lot going on at college in Fort Collins. Highway 34 to Loveland and Greeley. Exit 257 to Windsor. People always knew this was the case, so our traffic reporters had to dig deep into the news to report so it didn't repeat itself every day.

And do you know what happened most days? Sunglasses.

With sun glare, you're essentially driving directly into the sun as it rises above the horizon, making it difficult to see the road ahead and difficult to see oncoming traffic.

And believe it or not, CDOT will be closing I-70 regularly this winter for these otherwise benign driving conditions – except that from November through February the sun will be positioned so that I-70 is directly parallel to I-70 along Floyd Hill it runs for a number of kilometers so that all visibility of what is in front of you essentially disappears.

Apparently, for a significant stretch, it is the only stretch of major road in the entire state that runs at this particular angle, and therefore it is the only road that CDOT ever closes for this reason.

Closures may occur any time around sunrise for up to one hour, and during the winter months, sunrise occurs any time between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.
