HOBOKEN, NJ – Longtime Hoboken city councilwoman and mother of three Jen Giattino died Tuesday, her family and officials confirmed.

“It is with a broken heart that I announce that my beloved wife Jen – the love of my life and mother of our three children – has suddenly passed away,” her husband Joe Giattino said in a statement. “Not only was she an incredible mother, but she was…” also a dedicated public servant who cared deeply about this community. Jen's unwavering commitment, kindness and passion have touched so many lives here in Hoboken. We are devastated by her loss and I ask for privacy for our family as we try to navigate this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding and for keeping Jen in your thoughts and prayers.”

Gov. Phil Murphy and Mayor Ravi Bhalla both mourned her passing.

“Tammy and I are devastated by the sudden passing of Hoboken City Council President Jen Giattino,” Murphy said in a message. “As a loving wife, mother of three, and devoted council member who loved her community, Jen was in public service for all the right reasons.”

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the sudden and incredibly tragic death of Council President Jen Giattino,” said Mayor Ravi Bhalla. “Jen’s commitment to our community will never be forgotten. Her kindness, humility and quiet determination have made her a valued individual whose influence will be felt for generations to come.”

He added: “There are no words to describe the sense of loss we are all feeling. Jen was a leader in our community and a fighter for all of us. Hoboken has lost a bright light and we will miss her deeply. I hope our community can come together in their memory, embrace the Giattino family with prayer and support, and respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Rep. Rob Menendez said, “She put voters first and was well-liked by everyone.”

Giattino, who represented the 6th District (downtown), had compared Hoboken to “Sesame Street” in her past campaigns. She had just posted a photo of Halloween decorations around town last week.

Giattino, who turned 53 last month, won re-election to her fourth term in November 2023.

She has worked as a real estate agent, business owner, and was a professional ballerina in the past.
