The Detroit Tigers could secure a spot in the playoffs tonight!

Detroit sports fans are elated after the Tigers beat the Rays, and Lions fans are waiting for MNF

It has been 3,645 days since the Tigers last played in the playoffs. That could change tonight as the team is just one game away from securing its first playoff berth since 2014.

Everything is going well for the Tigers. On Monday, the magic number was six, but they beat the Tampa Bay Rays and the Minnesota Twins lost two of three games to the Miami Marlins, and the Tigers are firmly in the Wild Card.

They end the season with three games against the Chicago White Sox. If they win tonight, they'll be in the playoffs.

The Tigers also have the same record as the Kansas City Royals, who face the Atlanta Braves. Detroit will need to finish with a better record than Kansas City to clinch the second wild-card spot since the Royals own the tiebreaker.

The judge who handcuffed a sleepy teenager is back in office – in traffic court

Judge who handcuffed sleepy teenager at work in traffic court

Last month, we first told you the story of a Detroit judge who handcuffed and dressed a teenager in a prison uniform as she dozed in his courtroom during a field trip.

36th District Court Judge Kenneth King was temporarily removed from office shortly after our reports, and Chief Judge William McConico ordered him to undergo social and emotional training.

Now King is back in office, but instead of presiding over criminal cases, he's sitting in traffic court.

7 News Detroit called Fieger Law, which is representing Latorya Hill and her 15-year-old daughter in a civil lawsuit against King. Fieger Law said “no comment” when asked if the judge would return to the bench now that he has completed his paid training.

The local doctor's own immigration story inspires the plan to help students seek mental health services

Hispanic Heritage Month runs through mid-October and our Brittany Toolis featured a local doctor and her program to support students at Ypsilanti Community High School.

It’s called the Latinx Youth Empowerment Series, also known as “YES.” The group connects students with a migrant background and offers them psychosocial services. Many of the program developers say these students may not have had access to these services otherwise.

Dr. Fernanda Cross is one of the people working with the group. Cross, now an assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work, is an immigrant herself, having come to the United States from Brazil more than two decades ago.

Cross' native language is Portuguese and she only knew a handful of English words before she left the house.

“I just felt so powerless. No matter how much I wanted to, I couldn’t communicate,” she said. “You realize that no matter how intelligent and eloquent you are in your native language, people don’t really take you seriously because they don’t understand you or your accent.”
