NEW YORK (AP) — Heidi Klum and Janelle Monáe decided to do something extraordinary Halloween Costumes this year – both dressing up as the burly alien ET for their parties on opposite coasts.

While the similar costumes are likely to spark debates over who wore it best, popular in celebrity magazines, the stars chose different interpretations of the creature from Steven Spielberg's 1982 classic ET: The Extra-Terrestrial.

Klum's husband Tom Kaulitz dressed as ET, while the model and television personality appeared as Mrs. ET with animatronic eyes, a long neck and a blonde wig. Monae opted for a stockier version of the tiny alien that waddled on the red carpet at her Halloween party on Thursday night. The Grammy winner's ET featured animatronic eyes and a yellow index finger that mimicked the film character's glowing finger.

Monáe also adopted a different voice similar to ET's during interviews on Thursday. She downplayed any rivalry with Klum, telling The Associated Press: “There can be two hello queens. “I love Heidi.”

Klum and Monáe take Halloween seriously every time they dress up elaborate costumes. This year, their Halloween night parties took place on opposite coasts, with Klum meeting celebrity friends in New York and Monáe hosting her bash in Los Angeles.

Klum's face was in the creature's neck so that it could see and speak. She told the AP that her costume had been in the works for a year.

“I've been a fan of ET since I was 9 years old,” Klum said. As she spoke, the mouth of her costume head moved thanks to the mechanical functions inside the suit.

“I just love becoming this thing. “ET is very small and so I thought it would be fun to play with the proportions too,” said Klum.

Klum and Kaulitz tenderly touched their heads after revealing their costumes amid smoke and a light show at Klum's party.

Monáe revealed her costume to ET on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” on Wednesday. She also did an elaborate photo shoot, posted to Instagram, in which she was seen with ET in a basket on the front of the bike – a tribute to one of Spielberg's film's most iconic moments.
