Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday rejected “nonsense” uttered a day earlier at Donald Trump's campaign rally in New York City, which included a racist joke about Puerto Rico by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe.

“I'm very proud to have the support of Bad Bunny and Jennifer Lopez and others who supported me before this nonsense last night at Madison Square Garden,” the Democratic presidential candidate told reporters.

Superstar singers Bad Bunny and Lopez, who are from Puerto Rico, emphasized Harris' support for Puerto Rico in social media posts after Hinchliffe took a swipe at the US territory.

The vice president on Sunday released a plan to “build an economy of opportunity for Puerto Rico” by creating a task force to promote economic growth on the island.

On Monday, Harris said, “I think Donald Trump's event last night at Madison Square Garden really highlighted a point that I've been making throughout the campaign.”

“He focuses on his grievances and is actually fixated on that, on himself and on the division of our country. And it is in no way something that is going to strengthen the American family, the American worker,” Harris said.

“It is absolutely something that is designed to further fuel the attempt to divide us.”

Hinchcliffe spoke to the crowd at the Garden as one of the rally's warm-ups, long before Trump took the stage.

“There's a lot going on. I don't know if you know this, but right now there is literally a floating island of trash in the middle of the ocean. I think her name is Puerto Rico,” Hinchcliffe said.

The comedian also said, “These Latinos love having babies too. Just know that they are doing it.” There is no retreat. They don't do that. They come in, just like they did in our country.

Hinchcliffe made further racist comments during his appearance.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro noted in a radio interview Monday morning that his state is “the proud home of approximately half a million Puerto Ricans.”

Pennsylvania is a key swing state in the 2024 presidential election.

Trump campaign senior adviser Danielle Alvarez said in a statement about Hinchcliffe's comment about Puerto Rico, according to NBC News, “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.”
