Halo Infinite Dev says the canceled Battle Royale mode was fantastic

This isn't the first time we've heard rumors about a battle royale game mode planned for Halo Infinite. A lot of this came in the form of leaked information, but this one is a little more concrete.

A former game director at Indeed Affinity, a studio that has worked on many Halo projects, described something very interesting on his LinkedIn profile.

As Gamespot noted, this developer specifically mentions a Halo Infinite Battle Royale Play as “fantastic experience” for yourself and your team.

“I led a large team of designers working on a canceled battle royale mode for Halo. I believe this product could have been game-changing for the franchise. We loved playing it and working on it was a fantastic experience despite the cancellation.”

Although the mode obviously doesn't exist in the current version of the game, we've gotten hints of what such a mode might have felt like. Veterans of Halo Infinite may remember Last Spartan Standing, a short-lived game mode from the game's second season that was a small battle royale.

This game mode has since been removed from Halo, but that hasn't stopped fans from exploring the design space. Halo Infinite's blacksmithing tools are quite extensive, and players are eager to push them to their limits.

Could a battle royale have changed Halo Infinite's fate?

Halo Infinite Multiplayer

The launch of Halo Infinite is something that lives in both fame and infamy. In the first few hours of the game's release, when players were mostly concerned about whether it was fun, people loved every second of it. As people wanted to dig deeper, opinions worsened.

Halo Infinite's content drought has been widely discussed at this point. And while the game has certainly taken steps to address the problem, many consider it “too little, too late.”

These days, Halo Infinite's raw gameplay is still as fun as ever, and it has the armor customization, smithing tools, and progression paths that people demanded. But it took so long to develop that many players simply moved on to other games.

So when this developer says that a battle royale “could have changed the game,” it's hard to say if that's accurate, but it certainly could have made a difference.

“Halo has an incredible sandbox” has been said so many times now that it could be turned into a drinking game. It's said so often because, let's face it, it's true.

The sheer number of options available, the number of tools players can search the maps for, the interplay between combat and vehicles… from an outsider's perspective, it all looks like the perfect breeding ground for a massive battle royale.

But while we can all be outsiders, few become insiders. And today we found someone who is still raving about this experience to this day. It's a small glimpse into a world that could have been, but fascinating nonetheless.
