HALFTIME: Kentucky starts the Mark Pope era on a high note

HALFTIME: Kentucky starts the Mark Pope era on a high note

Hey, did we mention this is fun? We’re having a lot of fun here – and I’m sure of that Mark Pope is also in the locker room at halftime. In his first official game as Kentucky head coach, the Cats were up 46-24 after 20 minutes and evened the game difference at halftime.

How did they get there? It was a accomplished performance, with seven players scoring at least one basket and five players scoring eight points – Otega Oweh, Jaxson Robinson, Andrew Carr, Amari Williams and Koby Brea reached that mark and led the team. Lamont Butler added four while Brandon Garrison also had a basket.

As a team, the Wildcats shot an absurd 58.1 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from three and 100 percent at the line with 14 assists on 18 shots made. A few turnovers too many for their taste (five) I'm sure, but everywhere else was pretty clean.

As an individual, Williams was the star of the show on both ends, posting nine rebounds and three assists in 12 first-half minutes in addition to his eight points. Butler added four rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal, while Oweh collected two rebounds, one assist, one block and two steals. Robinson and Brea dominated their game from the perimeter and each shot two 3-pointers for the individual players from deep.

The ball movement was spectacular and the inbounds were even better. There is so much to love between one half and the next here at Rupp Arena.

20 minutes left until Mark Pope's first official win as head coach. Break it up, cats.
