Golf is preparing for the Windon Memorial in Chicago

After a strong performance in their first tournament of the fall, the Augusta University men's golf team is back in action on Sunday and Monday at the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern. The Jaguars are part of the 16-team field that will play 36 holes on Sunday and then 18 holes on Monday to crown a champion.

The Jaguars posted a seventh-place finish at the Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati two weeks ago, as the field will be even stronger this week. Illinois, the University of Houston, Indiana, Purdue, Arizona and Kentucky are among those set to participate.

At their season opener Stefan Jacobs was the lowly Jaguar and finished fifth overall. The team finished seventh, putting it in the top half of the field.

Augusta coach Steven Paine said they had to work out the little mistakes to survive in Chicago.

“This is probably one of the strongest fields we will play this fall,” Paine said. “There will be a lot of good teams we will be competing against, so it will be interesting to see where we are. But at the same time the expectations are very high. We have a lot of firepower that we can make a lot of birdies and if we can just stay disciplined and play Jaguar golf, I think we'll like where we are at the end of the week.”

Second semester Josh Koekemoer and redshirt junior Bo Blanchard II Each of the top 50 players carded will land in the first event of the fall portion of the season.

“I think we played well, we did a lot of things at a high level,” Paine said. “We led the field in birdies, which is a big plus. Now it's just a matter of cleaning up a few minor things, making bogeys on par fifths, three-putts and bogeys within 150 yards. These are a lot of things we do a lot. We're proud of it, and when we head to the next event we're exactly where we need to be.”
