MENDOCINO CO., 10/23/24 – It may still be fall, but Mendocino County can expect a taste of winter early Thursday morning when temperatures are expected to drop as low as 29 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The expected weather led the weather service to announce a freeze warning and freeze warning for parts of the county.

A freeze warning is in effect for northern inland Mendocino County from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday. The warning includes Covelo, Laytonville, Willits, Redwood Valley, Leggett, Piercy and parts of Potter Valley. Temperatures of up to 29 degrees are forecast in these areas, the weather service said.

A freeze warning is in effect for other parts of the county from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday, including Calpella, Philo, Hopland, Boonville and parts of Potter Valley. Temperatures can reach up to 33 degrees in these areas.

“Frost and freeze could destroy crops and other sensitive vegetation and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service said in a statement. Plants should be covered or brought indoors for protection.

The cold temperatures are also dangerous for people and animals. Here are more tips from the weather service:

  • Stay indoors during the worst of the cold spell
  • Keep a winter survival kit in your car if you need to travel
  • Check your vehicle's tire pressure, antifreeze level, heater/defroster, etc
  • Learn how to close water valves in case of possible burst pipes
  • Screen older adults, children, field workers and people with chronic illnesses
  • Homeless people should seek or obtain housing
