After almost a month away from the circuit, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris return to the battle for the F1 drivers' championship with this weekend's United States Grand Prix.

At the Singapore GP last month, McLaren star Norris won in style and extended defending champion Verstappen's lead in the overall standings. The gap between the two is now reduced to 52 points.

Norris' victory and Oscar Piastri's third place behind Verstappen at the Marina Bay Circuit means McLaren now has a 41-point lead over Red Bull in the constructors' championship.

The main race takes place on Sunday, October 20th at 1:55 p.m. local time (CDT) in Texas, which is 2:55 p.m. ET and 11:55 a.m. PT in the US and Canada, 7:55 p.m. BST in the UK 5:55am AEST on Monday morning in Australia. It takes place at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. The race will be broadcast in the USA on ABC And ESPN Plus.

The entire race weekend, including practice sessions and qualifying, will be broadcast on ESPN's TV and streaming networks in the United States. If you want to follow everything, you need access to the ABC and ESPN news channels on cable or live TV streaming or to the ESPN Plus streaming service. We've broken down everything you need to know to stream today's race and all the other F1 races this season.

Whether you have cable or not, ESPN's standalone streaming service is ideal for casual Formula 1 fans and an essential accessory for fanatics. It costs $11 per month (or $110 per year) and currently ESPN has a deal with Formula 1 to show 18 of 23 Grand Prix races this year. The catch is that ESPN Plus doesn't always broadcast the free practice or qualifying sessions, but rather sprint races and the sprint shootout.

If you're an F1 fan hoping for the Disney fix too, the Disney Trio bundle (Hulu, Disney Plus and ESPN Plus) might be an even better buy. It's great for fans who enjoy watching the portions of the race weekend that typically air on EPSN2 or ESPNews and who want to watch the latest Marvel movies or Star Wars shows.

If you're a die-hard fan of motorsports and formula series, ESPN Plus may not be for you as it rarely covers F2, F3 or Porsche Supercar racing. That's why ESPN Plus is ideal for casual fans who like to catch a race every now and then, or for superfans who don't want or need all the extra bells and whistles of F1 television but want to expand their coverage options.

Here's how you can watch Formula 1 online from anywhere with a VPN

If you're unable to watch the Formula 1 action locally, you may need another way to watch the games – this is where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to prevent your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic. It's also a good idea if you're traveling and connected to a Wi-Fi network and want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

A VPN allows you to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to gain access to the game. Most VPNs, like our Editors' Choice ExpressVPN, make this really easy.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you are streaming. You should make sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even if VPNs are legal, the streaming service can terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

ExpressVPN is our current top VPN pick for people who want a reliable and secure VPN, and it works on a wide range of devices. It normally costs $13 per month, but if you sign up for an annual subscription for $100, you'll get three months free and save 49%. That's $6.67 per month with code SPECIAL OFFERwhich should be applied automatically.

Note that ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Quick tips for streaming the races via a VPN

  • With four variables at play – your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN – your experience and success streaming F1 races may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as the default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “Search by city or country” option.
  • If you're having trouble receiving the game after turning on your VPN and setting it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log in to your streaming service subscription account and ensure that the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing range. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file in your account. Second, some smart TVs – like Roku – don't have VPN apps that you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll need to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you use (such as your phone) so that every device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main page for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases, with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you may be asked to confirm a numeric code or click a link that is sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. A VPN on your router also helps here, as both devices then appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember that browsers can often reveal a location despite using a VPN. Therefore, make sure you use a privacy-focused browser to log into your services. We usually recommend Brave.
