Five regional volleyball teams and one boys soccer team advance to the section finals

STRATFORD, Wis. (WSAW) – It was a real treat on Halloween night as the regional volleyball and soccer teams continued their march toward state in the sectional semifinals. A win would put them one win away from state.

Stratford, which started in D3 volleyball, had to end the season against Prescott. Despite a split after two sets, the Tigers lost the following two sets, ending their season. Elsewhere in D3, Nekoosa also ended with a 3-0 loss to Laconia.

In D2, Mosinee lost to Shawano in the sectional final. Shawano used a strong surge in the first set to set the tone for the evening, winning in four sets and ending Mosinee's season.

In D1, Marshfield lost 3-0 to Hudson. In D4, Laona/Wabeno move on after a 3-0 win over Edgar. They face Pittsville on a trip to state on Saturday after Pittsville defeated neighboring foe Auburndale 3-1. Loyal ended the season with a 3-1 loss to Cochrane-Fountain City. Tri-County also stumbled, losing 3-2 to Fall River.

In the transition to D5, three area teams advanced to the section finals; Newman, Columbus Catholic and Prentice. Newman defeated Green Bay NEW Lutheran 3-0 and heads to Florence for a state visit Saturday. Columbus Catholic edged Gilman with a 3-1 win. They will face Royall in the sectional final on Saturday at Almond-Bancroft. As for Prentice, they won a five-set thriller against Mercer to advance. They will face Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Saturday for a spot in the state tournament.

In boys soccer, a regional team advanced as Northland Pines defeated Cumberland 5-1. They face Aquinas on a trip to state on Saturday after the Blugolds defeated Columbus Catholic 2-0 on Thursday. Marshfield ended the season with a 4-1 loss to River Falls, as did Lakeland, which lost 0-0 to Shawano (5-4).
