East side Milwaukee Ald. Jonathan Brostoff has died, his close friends and advisers confirmed Monday and the mayor's office later announced.

“Jonathan brought a unique energy to his work at City Hall,” Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said in a statement. “His passion and commitment were evident every day. No elected official brought more enthusiasm to his work than Jonathan. He was a husband, a father, a son and to me a close friend. My thoughts and condolences go out to him.” Family and friends at this difficult time.

State Sen. Chris Larson described Brostoff as his best friend and said they had known each other since they studied together at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Larson said he brought Brostoff into the Democratic Party.

“Jonathan was the best friend you could hope for,” Larson said, adding, “He cared about other people with all his heart.”

Larson said Brostoff, 41, and his wife have four children together and have opened their home to more children.

Brostoff had worked for Larson in the county and state after attending UWM.

Brostoff was first elected to the state Legislature in 2014 in a closely contested Democratic primary. He then ran unopposed for the vacant District 3 seat on the Milwaukee Common Council in November 2022.
