Eagles-Buccaneers snap counts: Jahan Dotson is not performing despite playing a lot

Eagles-Buccaneers snap counts: Jahan Dotson is not performing despite playing a lot

The official snap counts from the Philadelphia Eagles' Week 4 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in. Let's take a look and do some analysis.

ATTACK

  • Jordan Mailata still hasn't missed a snap as of October 30, 2022.
  • Cam Jurgens missed some seasons due to cramps. Landon Dickerson moved into the middle and Tyler Steen came into the game at left defense.
  • Jahan Dotson led all Eagles pass catchers in snaps played. Still, he only saw four targets, which resulted in two catches for 11 yards. It's just not good enough. Is Dotson really that bad? Is Jalen Hurts just refusing to look his way? What's going on here?
  • Parris Campbell caught all four of his targets…for just 17 yards (4.3 average, lol) and a touchdown. Campbell has six scores for six catches, 30 yards and a touchdown in three games this season. That's somehow more production than Dotson produced in another game played.
  • Dallas Goedert managed some good offense but had a bad drop early in the game.
  • Johnny Wilson saw two targets but did not record a catch. One of the passes thrown his way landed behind him and was then knocked out of his hands. Wilson left the game early due to a concussion.
  • Saquon Barkley only had 12 touches in this game. Not ideal when it comes to winning the game, but the positive on the horizon is that they saved him from a few extra hits. Barkley had 10 carries and two catches for 32 yards, making him the only player used on offense. That was 51.1% of the Eagles' total yards.
  • Grant Calcaterra and Jack Stoll saw more of an even split as backup tight ends than Calcaterra as a clear TE2.
  • John Ross recorded his first snaps and catches in an NFL game since 2021. He got a target after Wilson had to leave the game.
  • Ben VanSumeren's single snapshot is not a typo; The Eagles used him as a fullback early on. It will be interesting to see if they continue to experiment with him in this role.
  • Will Shipley played on the Eagles' first offensive snap… and then only appeared on special teams for the rest of the game.

DEFENSE

  • Kudos to Quinyon Mitchell for surviving the Florida heat and playing the entire game.
  • Nakobe Dean played a lot and missed a lot of tackles.
  • CJ Gardner-Johnson ended up leaving the game early, apparently due to overheating.
  • Just way too many snaps from Avonte Maddox in this game and throughout the season. It's time to see what Cooper DeJean has as a nickel cornerback. DeJean can't be much worse. And at least there's a chance he'll get better as the season progresses.
  • Darius Slay was beaten multiple times. He left the game at some point and was replaced by Isaiah Rodgers.
  • Jalen Carter seemed to get a lot of attention from the Bucs' offensive line.
  • Tristin McCollum had to play a lot in a game against his twin brother's team because Reed Blankenship left early due to illness.
  • Josh Sweat had a sack! His first appearance in a regular season game since November 5, 2023. And now for another depressing Sweat statistic:
  • Bryce Huff recorded a solo tackle!!!!! He's on the board!!!! He had no other stats other than that one tackle.
  • Brandon Graham continues to bring it. He had a TFL and a sack.
  • Nolan Smith has zero TFLs, zero sacks and zero QB hits this season.
  • Trevor Booker recorded his highest snap count percentage this season. He led all Eagles defensive tackles with four total tackles (two solo). Maybe keep playing with him?
  • Jalyx Hunt played defensive snaps for the first time in his career. The same goes for Jeremiah Trotter Jr.

SPECIAL TEAMS

  • Eli Ricks was active for the second time this season. He played up to eight total special teams snaps.
  • Not included in previous graphic: Nick Gates played two special teams snaps.

DOES NOT PLAY

INACTIVE: Lane Johnson, AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Devin White, Tanner McKee, Trevor Keegan, Byron Young

ACTIVE: Kenny Pickett, Darian Kinnard

  • It's safe to say the Eagles really missed AJ, DeVonta and Lane. However, the offense still should have played better than it did. Those absences don't necessarily justify starting the game with three wins on four of the first five drives. 12 plays for zero total yards on those drives.
  • White won't be on this roster much longer, will he?
  • Kinnard was active for the first time this season when Lane was sidelined. But of course only for emergencies.
