DeKalb County wage and salary problems improve after check problems

DEKALB COUNTY, Georgia.DeKalb County Schools say payroll issues that left hundreds of teachers and staff without paychecks are improving.

In August, FOX 5 received calls and emails from several teachers and staff members reporting this incident. When FOX 5's Eric Mock arrived at the district's administration building, he saw dozens of teachers and staff members waiting to pick up paper checks before being asked to leave the property by DeKalb County School Police.

“I've heard people there say they can't even get food for their kids until they get the bill…me personally? My last two meals, I've had to scrape together the quarters I use to do my laundry to buy a fried chicken at Walmart just so it can be a meal,” Devin Gainer, a social studies teacher at Lithonia High School, told Mock.

The DeKalb County School District confirmed the issue in a statement, saying, “Approximately 300 new employees were inadvertently omitted from this morning's first payroll.”

At a meeting on Monday, DeKalb County Superintendent Dr. Devon Horton said things are getting better with each pay period.

He said additional checks had been issued to resolve the financial issues.

Horner expects all problems to be resolved in the next two to three months.
