Dave Canales could finally smile after his first victory

Dave Canales could finally smile after his first victory

That kind of “next, next” approach has been Canales' trademark during his short time here. He's optimistic but matter-of-fact.

“It was just a great visual of Panthers football,” Canales said. “They were able to run the ball, stop the run, play complementary football on third down, take advantage of red zone opportunities, all that stuff. The coverage units were just flying around with a lot of energy and chasing, which was just a leftover from a great week. So I just have to give my respects to the whole group for continuing to trust in that process.

“This is a great starting point for us to play our brand of football and I'm really looking forward to getting back home, getting back to work and having another great week.”

Still, this one was special. That couldn't be denied.

His family was in town from Los Angeles, and if you thought he was excited as he rattled off the players' accomplishments, you should have heard the Canales family roll call. He kept glancing under the Section 107 sign during the game to spot his father, and shared that pivotal moment with him.

“I could see exactly where he was,” Canales said. “The black vest and the gray goatee stood out up there.”

His mother was also on the field before the game, his brothers were there, so many cousins, in-laws and children.

“It means a lot to me to get that first win while they were here,” Canales said. “It's a really special moment.”
