Dame Maggie Smith's fellow actors from the historical drama Downton Abbey pay tribute to the Oscar-winning actress following her death at the age of 89.

Smith died on Friday, September 27, according to a statement from her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin. They also shared that the beloved actress was surrounded by friends and family and passed away peacefully in a hospital.

“She was an extremely private person and ended up hanging out with friends and family. She leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” the statement said.

Smith starred in all six seasons of the PBS series Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham. She was also known for her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the series Harry Potter Films.

Michelle Dockery, who played Lady Mary Crawley, remembered her late co-star in a statement People, “There was no one like Maggie. I feel incredibly lucky to have known such a loner. She will be missed very much and my thoughts are with her family.”

Paul Giamatti called her “a genius and a joy” in a statement shared with the publication.

He added: “A privilege to be around her. The kind of actor that makes you proud to be an actor. And I’ll never forget how sweet she was to my 12-year-old son when he visited the set.”

Hugh Bonneville, who played him Harry Potter The show's star's son, Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, told the publication: “Anyone who has ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her keen eye, sharp mind and impressive talent.”

“She was a true legend of her generation and will thankfully live on in so many great film performances. My condolences go out to her boys and the entire family,” he added.

Downton AbbeyShe also shared a post on her Instagram page paying tribute to the actress, calling her “a true British icon.”

“Thank you for everything Dame Maggie Smith,” they captioned the post.
