CSPD seizes a man's large capacity magazine and rifle near downtown Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Shortly after 11 a.m. on Wednesday morning, October 30, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) received a report of a black teenager carrying an AK-47 near the intersection of E. Boulder Street wore and N. Wahsatch Avenue.

According to CSPD, this is directly across the street from the Palmer High School gym. The report was also received during lunch break and there were 50 to 100 students in public around the school, the department said.

According to CSPD, the 18-year-old was not on school property when contacted and was carrying the AK-47 rifle over his shoulder in a non-threatening manner. The rifle contained a high-capacity magazine, which is illegal to possess in Colorado with a few exceptions. The primary exception is that a person may possess a large capacity magazine if he or she owned the magazine on or before July 1, 2013 and continued to possess the magazine.

CSPD said the magazine and rifle were confiscated while the investigation into the incident is ongoing. The department also said at this time there is no known threat to students or staff at the school or the public.
