Cruz maintains a slim lead in the race

A recent poll shows the race for U.S. Senate in Texas is nearly dead.

For weeks, incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz has had a razor-thin lead over U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas. However, surveys show that the challenger is still within striking distance in the final days of the election campaign.

A new Emerson College/The Hill poll shows Cruz leading Allred by just one percentage point — 48% to 47% — with 5% of voters still undecided. The last Emerson poll released in September showed Cruz ahead by four percentage points.

The latest poll numbers follow a heated prime-time debate between the two candidates, in which each tried to portray the other as an extremist. Allred tried to tie Cruz to the extreme abortion ban in Texas, while the incumbent blamed Allred and Democrats for the chaos at the southern border.

The following day, Allred traveled to El Paso to make his pitch to veterans and rally Democratic voters ahead of the Nov. 5 general election.

Polls between Ted Cruz and Colin Allred

Emerson's poll is hardly the only one on the Texas Senate race. Below is an overview of other recent surveys:

  • An Activote poll of 400 likely voters showed Cruz at 53% and Allred at 47%;
  • A Morning Consult poll of 2,048 likely voters showed Cruz at 46% and Allred at 45%;
  • A Marist poll of 1,186 likely voters showed Cruz at 51% and Allred at 46%;
  • A Florida Atlantic University PolCom Lab/Mainstreet Research poll of 775 likely voters found Cruz at 47% and Allred at 44%;
  • A separate PolCom Lab/Mainstreet Research poll at Florida Atlantic University of 811 registered voters showed Cruz at 46% and Allred at 43%;
  • A NY Times/Siena poll of 617 likely voters showed Cruz at 48% and Allred at 44%.

Neither campaign responded to a request for comment.
