Cowboys lose QB Dak Prescott to a hamstring injury

ATLANTA – The Dallas Cowboys lost quarterback Dak Prescott to a hamstring injury late in the third quarter of Sunday's 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

The Cowboys trailed 27-13 when Prescott left with 11:08 left in the fourth. Television footage showed Prescott grimacing after a 10-yard completion to Jalen Brooks on the Cowboys' final drive of the third quarter.

Prescott had a season-high 30 yards rushing, including a 22-yard gain on a scoring drive in the second quarter. It was the Cowboys' longest run of the season and Prescott came into the game with 24 yards rushing this season.

Prescott completed 18 of 24 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown before leaving. Replays also showed Prescott had a swollen hand, but the Cowboys did not comment on a possible injury to his hand.

Cooper Rush replaced Prescott and had 115 yards before the touchdown. He appeared in mopup duty in two games this season, completing 9 of 14 passes for 52 yards and one interception. He went 4-1 as the Cowboys' starter in 2022 after Prescott suffered a broken right thumb in the season opener.

In 2020, Prescott missed 11 games due to a dislocation and fracture of his right ankle. He missed one game in 2021 due to a right calf strain. Since breaking his thumb, he has made 36 consecutive starts, including Sunday.

With Prescott out, Trey Lance, who has served as the No. 3 quarterback since the Cowboys acquired him from the San Francisco 49ers last year, is the backup quarterback.
