Cool start to autumn, warmer later

After an interesting start to the day that included a heat wave in Yankton, hailstone-sized downpours from a storm near Marshall, and some morning thunderstorms in the southeast, it was a pretty nice afternoon overall.

We had a few isolated thunderstorms southeast of Marshall this afternoon, but that was about it for the second half of the day. Wind was the main topic of conversation this afternoon, and it will remain windy at times early in the week.

Tonight it will gradually clear up in many places… except in the southeast, where the clouds could be a bit more persistent. Nevertheless, it promises to be a fairly pleasant night.

The first day of fall will be cooler and not as windy. Clouds will increase in the southeast, but overall it will still be a nice day to get outside and welcome the new season. These conditions are expected to continue through Monday, although changes are already on the horizon as a new ridge of high pressure begins to form.

As the work and school week progresses, temperatures will gradually warm up, and as we approach the first weekend of fall, temperatures will once again be between 70 and 75 degrees. It won't be as warm as it has been so far this month, but it will still be well above average at times.

Except for a few possible showers on Monday, the next work and school week should remain mostly dry.
