Monday, October 14, marks Columbus Day, a federal holiday that many states and cities also recognize as Indigenous Peoples Day or Italian Heritage Day. Here's a look at what's closed and open in New Jersey.

Are federal offices closed on Columbus Day?

Federal offices, including U.S. Postal Service locations, will be closed and there will be no mail delivery. State and city government offices, including courts and social security offices, are also closed in New Jersey and New York.

The Department of Motor Vehicles will also be closed for the holidays.

Are schools open on Columbus Day?

Public schools across much of New Jersey are closed, with closures varying by district.

Are banks closed on Columbus Day?

Among major U.S. banks, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citibank branches are closing. However, in honor of Indigenous Peoples Day, Chase Bank and TD Bank will remain open.

Are retail stores open on Columbus Day?

Most retail stores such as Target and Walmart will be open on Columbus Day, but their hours may differ from usual. Bergen County's most popular shopping center, Westfield Garden State Plaza, also remains open. However, their opening hours may vary.
