Chiefs' Rashee Rice injures knee in collision with Patrick Mahomes

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Wide receiver Rashee Rice left the Kansas City Chiefs' game against the Los Angeles Chargers with a knee injury in the first quarter and will not return.

Rice injured his right knee after colliding with quarterback Patrick Mahomes while trying to recover a Chargers fumble during an interception return. Both of Rice's knees were hit in his collision with Mahomes, and the receiver's right knee appeared to hyperextend.

He was helped off the pitch and his knee was examined pitchside by medical staff before being taken on a cart to the dressing room.

Rice led the league with 24 catches in Week 4 and was second with 288 yards.

Mahomes threw down Travis Kelce at midfield on the Chiefs' second drive, and Chargers cornerback Kristian Fulton picked him up and returned him 29 yards with 6:06 to play. Rice caught Fulton from behind at the Chiefs' 20 and cleared the ball for a fumble, but Mahomes hit Rice's legs as the star quarterback ducked to attempt a tackle on Fulton.

Chiefs center Creed Humphrey recovered the fumble, but video review allowed the Chargers to keep the ball.

Rice is awaiting trial on multiple charges after he allegedly caused a high-speed crash involving multiple cars on a Texas highway last March.
