Chelsea were right to be disappointed with their defeat to Liverpool at Anfield last weekend considering how well they played, but they have already proven under Enzo Maresca that they are one of the better teams in the Premier League than Newcastle on Sunday (10 a.m. ET).

“The performance was very good,” said Maresca after the game. “We don’t like losing games or losing points but if there’s a way for you to do it then this is it. … Overall we controlled the game and dominated for the most part.” It was Chelsea's first defeat since the opening day (against Manchester City) and only the best of the best in the PL can say they have beaten the Blues in recent times. Since the beginning of February there have been just three PL defeats against Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool. Of course, the first 15 games of this series came under Mauricio Pochettino, but the PL's recent average starting XI continues to improve by leaps and bounds under Maresca. Cole Palmer has already scored 6 goals and 5 assists this season (eight appearances), but Nicolas Jackson is also in top form (13 goals and assists in his last 13 league games) and Noni Madueke (4 goals in 7 games this season). ) and Jadon Sancho (3 assists in 5 games) with numerous contributions of their own.

On the one hand, only two teams have conceded fewer goals than Newcastle (8), meaning Eddie Howe's side have played every game this season. On the other hand, only four teams (including Manchester United) have scored fewer goals than the Magpies (also 8; at this point they had scored 20 last season). Case in point: last weekend's loss to Brighton, in which Newcastle had twice as many shots as the Seagulls and 60 percent possession but failed to find the net and lost 1-0. A week earlier it was the same: Everton dominated with 68 percent of ball possession in a goalless draw, and so Newcastle are in the middle of a four-game winless run. Anthony Gordon signed a new long-term contract this week, Alexander Isak is back in the squad and Callum Wilson is close to returning from injury.

Live Updates Chelsea vs Newcastle – By Nick Mendola

Cole Palmer scores his goal – Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle (47th minute)

Did it always happen? Perhaps.

Romeo Lavia brings the ball to Palmer and Palmer does the rest.

Nick Pope didn't have a great day in goal and will feel like he should have done better.

This could be derailing for Eddie Howe's men. How will he try to fix this?

Half time – Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle

It has to be said that the result is fine, although the Blues could have had a huge lead if they had been a little sharper in the early stages.

The right side of both teams cost them the goals.

The shot rate is 9:7 in favor of the hosts, who hold around 60% of the ball.

Newcastle leads in xG, 1.40-0.96, but the game is of course balanced.

Goal from Alexander Isak! Chelsea – Newcastle 1:1 (32nd minute)

Now it's Newcastle's turn to carry out a stern VAR offside/onside check.

The game was going well up until Isak's goal.

Sandro Tonali plays a big role and Lewis Hall and Isak are kept onside by Chelsea players before the latter converts the former's pass.

Isak equalized for Newcastle against Chelsea

Thanks to Alexander Isak's second goal of the season and the 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Newcastle are back on level terms.

Danger from Newcastle

Harvey Barnes has a chance which is blocked by a slipping Malo Gusto, then Sandro Tonali's attempt to win the loose ball is also blocked by Reece James.

Goal from Nicolas Jackson! Chelsea – Newcastle 1-0 (18th minute)

This is out of the picture.

Cole Palmer tries an ambitious pass through traffic and it works!

Pedro Neto has beaten a lopsided Valentino Livramento and sends a perfect square ball down the field for the in-form Jackson to fire past Nick Pope.

Jackson thrashes Chelsea in front of Newcastle

An exquisite ball from Cole Palmer finds the sprinting Pedro Neto, who beats his man and delivers a timely cross to Nicolas Jackson to deny Chelsea's opener against Newcastle.

Bruno Guimaraes screams for a penalty

Guimaraes is angry and hurts himself in the penalty area after Alexander Isak played the Brazilian into the penalty area.

Isak was brought down by Levi Colwill, but the contact occurred outside the penalty area. Since the referee did not call a foul, it cannot be retroactively applied to the game as a mere foul.

Cole Palmer scores, but is he offside?

This will be razor thin as Cole Palmer raced towards Nicolas Jackson's through ball and fired a beautiful, precise low shot over the line from the far post.

Palmer is on par with Bruno Guimaraes, but is just offside! Newcastle is saved.

Still a warning shot.

Chelsea vs Newcastle team news, analyzed

Of Chelsea's Sunday starters, only Pedro Neto started in the midweek win at Panathinaikos, and he played 61 minutes, while none of Enzo Maresca's substitutes started in the Conference League today. Newcastle will be without Anthony Gordon, who has picked up a knock, while Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are still missing from a struggling defense. Former Chelsea star Lewis Hall needs to make another change at left-back.

Chelsea lineup

Sanchez, James, Fofana, Colwill, Gusto, Lavia, Caicedo, Madueke, Palmer, Neto, Jackson

Chelsea vs Newcastle prediction

Given their current form, it's hard to imagine Newcastle starting their season against Chelsea, but counterattack opportunities abound and that's when the Magpies are at their best. Close, but not quite. Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle.
