“Listen, I said it last night. We’re trying to finish the game the right way,” Payton said. “We’re not trying to increase anyone’s score. It's the National Football League. I've had games leading by 28 points in the fourth quarter and losing, so we're trying to finish. The Burton.” The throw from Sutton attempts to continue a drive.

Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn confronted Payton after the game to tell the head coach that he didn't appreciate the Broncos putting up a higher score.

Denver scored a fake field goal and a trick play on 4th-and-2 to lead 28-7 in the fourth quarter.

“I coached his dad, so I yelled at him,” Payton said of the interaction with Horn after the game. “I don’t know what the exchange was, but I enjoyed his father, who I coached. He was frustrated, I think he yelled at one of our other players. I like him. I think he’s a good player.”

Payton shared that he hopes to instill a winning mentality in his players, meaning they try to win every game with the same energy in all four quarters.

“I want them to adopt a winning personality. I want them to adopt a personality that understands what wins in our league. And see, I say this all the time: Confidence only comes from proven ability. Now do it.’ I feel like we’re a more confident team now in October than we were at the start of the season. And there are certain things that we need to improve.

Payton doubled down on his comments by saying the Broncos were just trying to extend the drive and nothing more.

“This has nothing to do with the previous question about whether we tried to score? That has nothing to do with it. There is no story there. We're trying to win a football game. We're trying to extend the drive.” I throw the ball to my fullback, Burton, so I'm not necessarily expecting a touchdown. And, you know, it wasn't 50, 60 or 70 (points). . I didn't look at it at all, I just paid attention to the fact that we're trying to win a football game and learn to finish a game.
