The second day of the Breeders' Cup includes nine races, starting with the Filly & Mare Sprint and concluding with the Dirt Mile. In between takes place the crown jewel of the Breeders' Cup, the Classic, which comes with prize money of $7 million.

This year's Breeders' Cup will take place at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. A total of $34 million in purses and awards will be paid out during the two-day event.

Here's a look at the results, purses, payouts and highlights of the day.

Filly and mare sprint (Prize money: 1 million US dollars)

1. Soul of an Angel (Prize Share: $520,000): Win ($41.60), Place ($9.80), Show ($8.40)

2nd Company ($170,000): Place ($5.80), Show ($4.20)

3. Pleasant ($90,000): Show ($8.20)

Soul of an Angel emerged victorious 12-1 after attacking from far out. She narrowly beat Society, who held the lead on the inside rail for most of the backstretch before Soul of an Angel finished furiously.

Lawn sprint (Purse worth $1 million)

1. Starlust (Prize Share: $520,000): Win ($69.20), Place ($27.20), Show ($14.60)

Jockey Rossa Ryan had the ride of his life here, leading Starlust to victory at 30-1 by splitting the horse between two competitors on the course and emerging victorious. Ryan then called it a “perfect start” in a post-race interview with Carlos Morales.

An investigation followed, but the result stood.

What a star – one of Europe's best young jockeys that Rossa Ryan has retained #Starlust was quiet at the beginning and delivered it perfectly. A brilliantly timed run to take the win #TurfSprint. An investigation is underway – let's hope the result stands.
