Bills coach has it in his hand, explaining how he blew it late in the loss to the Texans

HOUSTON – The Buffalo Bills had somehow managed to claw their way back into Sunday's game against the Houston Texans after being down 20-3 in the third quarter.

Then a collapse late in the game led to the Texans scoring a game-winning field goal as time expired, negating the Bills' defensive performance, resulting in two turnovers by CJ Stroud in the fourth quarter.

Bills coach Sean McDermott blamed himself.

With less than a minute left, the Texans were forced out of field goal range by an intentional grounding penalty from Stroud. With 41 seconds left, the Bills got the ball at their 3-yard line. Houston had three timeouts and the Bills needed a first down to avoid giving the ball back to the Texans.

Buffalo averaged 5.4 yards per rush and just 4.1 yards per pass in the game. Quarterback Josh Allen had one of his worst games of the last five seasons. He completed 9 of 30 passes for just 131 yards. Despite difficulties in the passing game, offensive coordinator Joe Brady managed to run three passing plays in a row. All three were incomplete passes.

So the Bills punched back to the Texans with 16 seconds left. They ran a five-yard play while Buffalo's safeties played deep as if Houston were trying to score a touchdown. Texas kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn hit the 59-yard field goal to win the game for his team, leaving the Bills trailing 3-2.

McDermott said he should have run the ball.
