Bengals rave about Giants defense and pass rush: “The real deal”

Bengals rave about Giants defense and pass rush: “The real deal”

The bags keep coming.

The Giants, with Azeez Ojulari starting in place of Kayvon Thibodeaux – who was on injured reserve after wrist surgery – sacked Joe Burrow four times in a 17-7 loss to the Bengals, increasing their NFL-leading sack production to 26.

The Bengals were impressed.

“They lead the league in sacks,” Burrow said. “They’re real, and they didn’t have any of their boys. They have good games (up front). They have good players. They make it difficult for us and their second job was to cover the entire day. It’s a good defense.”

Burrow entered the game as the NFL's best quarterback in passer rating, but completed just 19 of 28 passes for 208 yards, both well below his season average.

“I usually miss shots,” Burrow said. “I felt like I let the pressure get to me a little bit.”

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor is typically capable of running a far more efficient offense than the one he orchestrated Sunday night.

“(The Giants) did a good job up front,” Taylor said. “They are putting pressure on you. You can win some singles games. They've really invested in this area and it shows. “They did a good job at the back and just provided variety.”

Giants head coach Brian Daboll did not provide an update on LT Andrew Thomas, who underwent an MRI scan of his foot on Monday.

Thomas said he injured his foot during the Giants' 16-play touchdown drive in the third quarter and that “I was in pain” while he remained in the game.

He said after the game “not great” how he felt.

Daboll said he will keep Greg Joseph as the place-kicker.

Graham Gano (hamstring injury) can come off injured reserve but may not be ready to return.

Joseph, brought in to replace Gano, missed his first field goal attempt for the Giants, made his next eighth and then missed from 47 and 45 yards in the loss to the Bengals.

“He’s done pretty well since he’s been here,” Daboll said. “And then we missed two of them.”

It looks like the Eagles have significant injury concerns heading into Sunday's game against the Giants.

Left tackle Jordan Mailata was sidelined in the 20-16 win over the Browns with a leg injury and will be out for a few weeks.

He could be replaced by former Jets first-round pick Mekhi Becton, who is currently the starting right tackle.

CB Darius Slay (knee) and TE Dallas Goedert (hamstring) were also sidelined against the Browns.

If that 47-yard touchdown run by Burrow in the first quarter seemed like a long-distance deal for an opposing quarterback, trust your senses.

It was the longest scoring run by a quarterback against the Giants in nearly 84 years.

Pittsburgh's Bill Dudley scored on a 66-yard run in the Steelers' 17-9 victory on November 1, 1942.

Burrow's run was the longest ever by an opposing quarterback against the Giants since Cam Newton's 47-yarder on Dec. 20, 2015.
