Auburn Cornerback Champ Anthony driven off the field against Arkansas

Auburn Cornerback Champ Anthony driven off the field against Arkansas

Auburn lost a cornerback early and probably the whole game against Arkansas. Defensive back Anthony von Champ suffered an injury in the first quarter when he was carted off the field. By the time the cart drove away, Anthony's leg was already in a cast.

The ESPN broadcast didn't even show a replay of the injury because live commentator Mark Jones said it was too gruesome to show again. They were, however, able to show the entire Auburn sideline praying for their teammate, a nice touch in what was surely a scary moment for Anthony.

Before the game, Anthony was dealing with an injury issue. He was listed as probable on Auburn's availability report on Thursday. On Friday's report, Anthony was not listed and was cleared to play in front of the crowd at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Anthony is playing his second season in the program, but is one of the more experienced players in Auburn's secondary. Head Coach Hugo Freeze could get him out of the NCAA Transfer Portal as a JUCO star and the impact was immediate as Anthony played in all three games.

Because of his positive play, Anthony was given a larger role as he was inserted into the starting lineup as a nickel corner. In three games, Anthony recorded 12 tackles – 10 of them solo – and one tackle for loss.
