At least 16 people died as a result of Hurricane Milton

Hurricane Milton is believed to have killed at least 16 people across Florida, including three in Tampa Bay.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, local authorities across the state have reported storm-related fatalities.

At least two people have died in Pinellas County and one in Hillsborough.

According to city police, a woman in her early 70s from Tampa became trapped under a large tree branch that had fallen in the Tampa Heights neighborhood Thursday morning. According to officials, Hurricane Milton cleanup work was underway on the property when the tree branch fell and struck and killed her. Tornadoes elsewhere in Florida have left at least six people dead.

To date, Milton-related deaths have been reported in the following counties:

  • St. Lucie County: 6 reported
  • Volusia County: 3 reported
  • Pinellas County: 2 reported
  • Hillsborough County: 1 reported
  • Citrus County: 1 reported
  • Polk County: 1 reported
  • Sarasota County: 1 reported
  • Orange County: 1 reported

Local jurisdictions determine whether a death is storm-related, the department said. There may be differences between counties.
