Arne Slot on Chelsea win: “I have a lot of trust in this team”

Arne Slot on Chelsea win: “I have a lot of trust in this team”

How happy he was with the victory…

Yes, of course (I'm happy) with the result. Because when you win, you are always happy about the result. In an ideal world we would have completely surpassed them. That's definitely not what we did. In my opinion it was an even game. There were times in the game where we had to work really hard not to concede a goal, but it's really pleasing to see that we managed to do that. I think we all saw the great blocking tackles that Dominik (Szoboszlai) and Curtis (Jones) had – Curtis in the first half, Dominik in the second half. These moments are as crucial as the goals we scored, and there were also many eventful decisions by the referee that made the game what it was. I think if you're not a Liverpool or Chelsea fan you really enjoyed what you saw today. Ultimately, as a Liverpool fan, you also liked what you saw today.

About Jones' performance…

I think what we all made of it today. He had a very good game. He had a hard time controlling Cole Palmer, who I think is an incredible player. It's so difficult to defend him because he has so many qualities. Curtis did really well today. In my opinion he controlled him for most of the game, it's almost impossible to control a player like that for 90 minutes, but he was pretty close. And then to have an influence on the opposition, with a goal and two penalties that he was involved in, one of which ended up being disallowed by the VAR, but that shows he had a big impact on both sides of the pitch.

Whether winning such a game gives him confidence that his team can maintain its position at the top of the league…

I think it was mostly the media that told us that this was our first big test. I think when you go to Old Trafford against a very strong team like (Manchester) United, it's definitely a test too. I said, “I think it was in the press conference on Friday. Don't judge us by this week, you have to judge us by six, seven or eight (more) games.” I'm saying that now after this win, because Wednesday is Leipzig, Sunday is Arsenal, then it's Brighton, Brighton (and ) then it's Leverkusen and Aston Villa. So in my opinion this is our biggest test to play Champions League and Premier League; the toughest games three days in a row. That's what (Manchester) City did last season, that's what Arsenal did – both clubs have done that two years in a row now. You saw how difficult it was for us two years ago and you saw last season how difficult it was for (Manchester) United and Newcastle to be in the Champions League and Premier League. For me, that is the test we have to pass to see if we can stay or be where we are now.
