Arkansas Football vs. Tennessee: Hogs stun volunteers

Arkansas Football vs. Tennessee: Hogs stun volunteers

FAYETTEVILLE – Two years of poor late-game performances without a decisive win finally reached the breaking point for Arkansas football Saturday night.

The Razorbacks (4-2, 2-1 SEC) erased a two-point deficit in the second half to beat No. 4 Tennessee 19-14 and earn their first home win over a top-five team since 1999 .

Malachi Singleton, filling in for Taylen Green after the starting quarterback left with an injury early in the fourth quarter, scored the game-winning touchdown on an 11-yard run with 1:17 left.

It was Arkansas' defense that won the game. Tennessee entered the night leading the country in offensive rating and ranked third in yards per game, but the Volunteers (4-1, 1-1) were unable to find success other than two touchdown drives early in the third quarter. They only managed 332 yards of total offense.

Fourth quarter

  • It's borderline unbelievable. With their backup quarterback, the Hogs marched 59 yards in four plays and took the lead with 1:17 left. Excellent play calling from Bobby Petrino on the drive. However, the two-point attempt was unsuccessful, leaving Arkansas leading 19-14.

  • That was a strange ride. Arkansas reached Tennessee's two-yard line, but Taylen Green suffered a serious hit on a long pass and had to leave the game. He tried to come back, but the Hogs kept backup Malachi Singleton on the field and couldn't find the end zone. Matthew Shipley is good from 22 yards and Tennessee's lead is 14-13 with 12:08 remaining.

Third quarter

  • The Hogs responded with a game-winning score, cutting the deficit to 14-10 with 4:38 left in the third quarter. Really nice passing attack from Taylen Green, and Jackson finished it off with his 10th touchdown of the season.
  • Two personal foul penalties against the Arkansas defense made life easier for Tennessee on this drive, and the Volunteers tied it with another short run by Sampson. Tennessee's offense figured out the Hogs' defense after halftime and the score was 14-3 with 8:19 left in the third quarter.
  • Tennessee scored on its first drive of the second half, and Sampson was instrumental with three runs for 60 yards in the series. Arkansas played so well in the first half, but it all came undone as Tennessee now has the lead.

Second quarter

  • Kyle Ramsey is no good from 44 yards and Arkansas' lead remains 3-0. The Hogs defeated Tennessee 223-29. Isaac TeSlaa was wide open for an easy touchdown on third down, but Taylen Green never looked his way.
  • On fourth-and-1 from the Tennessee 20, Sam Pittman goes for it, but the Hogs fail. Taylen Green started with receivers covered but failed to reach the line-to-gain. The sequence is particularly brutal because Isaiah Sategna dropped a touchdown three plays earlier. Arkansas defeated Tennessee 192-34, but the scoreboard only reads 3-0.
  • Tennessee was able to advance into Arkansas territory, but the Hogs' defense was again pulled off the field, forcing a Volunteers punt. Tennessee's offense averaged 54 points per game but was held scoreless early in the second quarter. Arkansas takes over at its own six-yard line.

First quarter

  • The Hogs faced a fourth-and-1 in Tennessee territory, and while Taylen Green found Var'keyes Gumms, the tight end made the catch with his knee down and the ball just above the first-down line. The quarter ends with Arkansas leading 3-0. Tennessee's offense only had possession for 2:20 minutes in the opening period.
  • Impressive opening drive from the Hogs that took nearly 10 minutes in 16 plays, but they have to settle for a field goal after a false start penalty on a second-and-goal from the Tennessee 1-yard line. Arkansas is 3-0 and is the first time Tennessee has trailed this season.

Arkansas vs Tennessee Prediction

Tennessee 34, Arkansas 20: It's hard to imagine Arkansas being able to keep up with the Volunteers' offense. If Arkansas can run the football successfully and give Taylen Green enough time, there is an outside chance to pull off an upset. Unfortunately, the Hogs haven't proven they can do both against quality opponents.
