Anthony Davis and Rui Hachimura of the Lakers miss the game against the Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis has been ruled out of Wednesday night's game against the Memphis Grizzlies because of a bruised left heel.

Davis tested the injury during a pregame practice and determined he could not play.

Lakers coach JJ Redick said Davis did not undergo imaging on his foot after the condition worsened late in the team's loss to the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

“From what I understand, it has bothered him a little bit throughout the summer and so far this season,” Redick said. “We will of course miss him very much.”

LA, 1-3 on its current road trip, returns home to host the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday. Redick said Davis could be available for that game.

“I think we all want to keep a long-term eye on the health of all of our players for an 82-game season,” Redick said. “I just spoke to him before I came and spoke to you. He was very positive about how it felt, but we realize we have a long flight back to LA, we have to turn around and do it again on Friday. So hopefully that. “An additional 48 hours of rest would be good.”

In addition to Davis missing a league-leading 32.6 points per game, the Lakers also lost another starter against the Grizzlies as Rui Hachimura was sidelined due to illness.

Backup center Christian Koloko, a two-way signee who was recently cleared to return by the NBA's Fitness-to-Play Panel after being out of action since April 2023 with a blood clot issue, played against Memphis.

“The game was almost taken away from me,” Koloko said after Wednesday’s shooting. “I'm just grateful to be here now. So now I'm just going to enjoy every moment I have on a basketball court. And you never know what can happen. But yeah, I'm just happy to be here.” . And I know for sure that the first game will be special.
