Andrew Garfield talks to Elmo about grieving his late mother in a viral clip

Garfield made a surprise appearance with Elmo on Friday to talk about grief, love and his late mother Lynne, who died of pancreatic cancer

Andrew Garfield and Elmo shared a heartwarming moment on Friday as the actor opened up about the grief that comes with losing a loved one. And the clip goes viral.

The conversation came about after Elmo reached out to Garfield to ask him how he was doing, just like he did with everyone else on “Sesame Street” that day. Garfield tells Elmo about his late mother Lynne, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2019, and how missing her makes him feel closer in a “strange way.”

“Oh, I'm so happy to see you, Elmo. You have no idea,” Garfield said in the clip, which has been viewed millions of times. “I'm fine, you know… I'm just thinking about my mother today. You know, she died not long ago and I just miss her. I miss her very much.”

Elmo expressed his condolences to Garfield, who stated that it's “actually okay to miss someone.”

“Elmo is always very sad when he misses someone,” Elmo replied.

This sadness, Garfield explained, is “kind of a gift, a beautiful thing in a way, because it means that you really love someone when you miss them.”

“When I miss someone, I remember,” he continued. “When I miss my mother, I remember all the cuddles I got from her, all the hugs I got from her.”

Garfield says he enjoys the memories of “my mother and the joy that she gave me and the joy that she gave to my brother and my father and everyone she ever met, everyone around her. “

“When I miss her, I remember that she made me so happy. This way I can celebrate her and miss her at the same time,” Garfield said.

Elmo “really enjoyed” listening and was “very happy” that Garfield talked about his late mother and told him that he too would “think about his mom and celebrate her.”

“Nothing would make me happier and nothing would make her happy because I have to tell you something, I have to tell you a secret,” Garfield says. “Elmo was my mom’s favorite.”
