According to Sam Altman, ChatGPT-5 won't be available in 2025 - but superintelligence is "attainable" with today's hardware.

In a recent Reddit AMA (ask me anything), OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, along with several other top OpenAI executives, gave a number of hints about the future of the company and what to expect from ChatGPT next year.

First, when Altman was asked if there would be a ChatGPT-5, he doubled down on his “fake news” answer to “Nothing we'll call GPT-5,” he replied. However, the wording “this year” suggests that OpenAI could release a new LLM very soon.

It's been a busy week for OpenAI, with the release of Advanced Voice mode in the desktop app versions of ChatGPT and a new ChatGPT search that's challenging even Google. When asked about the value of the recently released ChatGPT search Compared to traditional search engines like Google, Altman enthused: “For many searches, I find it's a much quicker/easier way to get the information I'm looking for.” I think we'll see this especially with queries that require more complex research. I also look forward to a future where a search query can dynamically render a custom web page in response!”

When asked about the next update for Dall-E 3, the image generator that is part of ChatGPT, Altman was noncommittal: “The next update will be worth the wait!” But we don't have a release plan yet.

Real intelligence

One area where ChatGPT is challenged by its competitors is AI, which can perform tasks autonomously. We've seen Google move into this space with its Jarvis AI. When asked whether ChatGPT will be able to perform tasks on its own, Altman replied: “In my opinion, that will be a big issue in 2025,” indicating the direction OpenAI will take next year.

Referring again to autonomous AI, Altman responded when asked what the next big breakthrough for ChatGPT would be: “We will always have better models, but I think the next big breakthrough will be agents.” Agents are autonomous AI -Bots that can perform tasks for you.

Perhaps Altman's most interesting comment concerned the future of AGI – artificial general intelligence. Considered by many to be the “real” AI, it is a model of artificial intelligence that could rival or even surpass human intelligence. Altman has previously stated that we could have AGI within “a few thousand days.”

When asked by a Reddit user whether AGI is achievable with known hardware or requires something completely different, Altman replied: “We believe it is achievable with current hardware.”
