A fire in downtown Baltimore caused traffic disruptions and a disruption to the light rail system

BALTIMORE – A Level 5 fire damaged several buildings in downtown Baltimore on Sunday, brought traffic to a standstill and caused the light rail to be suspended for hours on Sunday.

Emergency crews responded to a structure fire near the intersection of Lombard and Eutaw streets around 9:30 a.m., just hours before the Orioles hosted a game at nearby Camden Yards. No injuries were reported.

Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said more than five commercial buildings and one residential building suffered “significant damage.”

“Some buildings are badly damaged by the fire,” Wallace said. “Other buildings tried to spread and we used a lot of water to stop the fire. All of those buildings are badly damaged.”

More than 200 firefighters battled the fire. A fifth alarm was raised around 10 a.m. to ensure firefighters had the resources needed to extinguish the fire.

“We use what we call aerial master streams, so we let a lot of water into these buildings from above,” Wallace said.

The fire and response forced the light rail to shut down for hours and put in place detours that caused traffic congestion as the Orioles prepared for their 1:35 p.m. game against the Detroit Tigers. The light rail has resumed normal service.

“With the downtown fire now under control and nearly extinguished, I want to thank all the firefighters from @BaltimoreFire and the surrounding communities who sent assistance,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott. “They responded quickly and expertly and safely handled a very difficult situation.”

Cindy Patterson, who attended the Orioles game, said she could not get into her Eutaw Street parking garage.

“We came here to go to the Orioles game and the traffic is absolutely outrageous,” Patterson said. “I've never seen it this bad down here. A lot of parking garages are affected. I have a monthly pass for the Eutaw parking garage and I can't get to it.”

Wallace said the cause and outbreak of the fire are currently under investigation.

“We have a large area that is affected by traffic flow,” Wallace said. “We are operating in unified command mode because we have to address many different things.”
