How much rain, wind and damage did Indiana suffer from Hurricane Helene?

From strong winds to power outages to rain, Hurricane Helene made landfall on the Georgia-Florida coast Thursday evening and the storm hit Indiana day and night Friday.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has warned that the storm could cause damage to trees and buildings, lead to power outages and dangerous driving conditions with possible local flooding. Up to five centimeters of rain is expected by Saturday evening.

Power outages across Indiana

As of Saturday morning, Duke Energy reported nearly 11,000 customers without power across the state, with most of the outages spread across central Indiana. The highest number on Friday was over 59,700.

As of Saturday morning, AES Indiana reported 40,478 of its customers without power across Indianapolis, many of which were concentrated in northern parts of Indianapolis, including Washington Township and near Eagle Creek. On Friday evening, AES Indiana announced that over 50,000 customers were without power.

Both Duke and AES Indiana said their teams are working hard to make the recovery as quick and safe as possible.

Strong winds hit Indiana

On Saturday morning, AES Indiana said wind gusts reached speeds of up to 55 miles per hour and caused significant damage across its service area, affecting 97,000 customers. More than half of their customers have been restored and crews continue to work to restore service to the remaining 43,000.

Numerous trees and power lines fell throughout central Indiana.

On Saturday morning, the National Weather Service in Indianapolis said rain was returning to the area and there would be intermittent showers throughout the weekend. Additional amounts of a quarter to an inch of rain are likely.
