No. 8 Volleyball defeats Texas A&M to open SEC play

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 8 Texas Volleyball ushered in a new era of Southeastern Conference play with a 3-1 victory over Texas A&M, 25-16, 14-25, 25-23, 25-20, on Friday in front of a record crowd of 9,236 at Reed Arena.

The Longhorns (6-3, 1-0) picked up their first-ever SEC win and earned the Longhorns' first win at the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown.

Devin Kahahawai had another big match with a total of 11 kills, but she took the match in the fourth set. She scored six kills in the fourth set alone and secured victory with an ace. Kahahawai hit .304 in the match and added five digs and three blocks.

Reagan Rutherford And Madisen Skinner each also had 11 kills to share the team lead with Kahahawai. Jenna Wenaas added eight kills and finished the game with 11 digs, three assists and two service aces.

Marianna Singletary was the team's leading blocker with four total blocks and added seven kills on just 12 swings.

The Longhorns got off to a great start in the opening set, earning a 25-16 win. Texas batted .323 as a team and held the Aggies to a .057 batting average. Wenaas was outstanding in the first set with five kills on just nine swings.

Texas A&M started the second set very well, got out to a big lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-14.

The Longhorns trailed 9-7 in the third set before going on an impressive 10-2 run to take a 17-11 lead. The Aggies came right back and erased the lead with an 11-5 run to tie the set at 22-1. Despite a very tight finish, Texas managed to win the set 25-23 and regain the lead in the game.

Kahahawai took the fourth set with five kills and the decisive service ace. The teams were tied 13-1 before Texas used a 5-1 run to move to 18-14. The Aggies managed to grab the win late, but the Longhorns closed the game with a 3-0 run to secure the victory.

Texas will continue its road trip to open SEC play, traveling to Baton Rouge to face LSU on Sunday at 2 p.m
