Police and schools in Kenosha foil suspected school shooting plot

UPDATE at 4:25 p.m. CST on November 7, 2024: Roosevelt Elementary School faculty and Kenosha area law enforcement have foiled a possible school shooting attempt, resulting in the arrest of a 13-year-old suspect – a current student at Mahone Middle School and former Roosevelt student.

According to Kenosha Police Chief Patrick Patton, the suspect brought a suspicious black duffel bag that they believed contained a gun to school around 9:00 a.m. CST Thursday morning. The suspect allegedly attempted to open several locked side doors before attempting to break through the front entrance to a vestibule.

According to Kenosha police, school staff confronted the suspect and asked him questions about why he was there, causing him to become visibly nervous and eventually flee the scene. They alerted Kenosha police, who began an investigation that culminated in an arrest on 30th Avenue in the area of 67th St. and Roosevelt Rd in Kenosha; Partly thanks to tips from the community.

“The investigation revealed that the suspect shared videos and made several comments to fellow students for weeks leading up to the present,” said Kenosha Police Chief Patrick Patton. “Parents and/or children are asked to report this information to law enforcement immediately.”

Authorities learned that the suspect had numerous searches related to school shootings in his internet history and had previously recorded a video with an assault rifle, which they showed at a media briefing on Thursday. Although they could not confirm it at the time, authorities feared that the same rifle was in the black duffel bag brought to the scene.

Kenosha Police continue to actively investigate this issue and expect to have more information on Friday, November 8th. They are currently unsure how the teenager came into possession of a firearm.

During the course of this investigation, authorities received a seemingly unrelated report of a potential active shooter at Gateway Technical College. Multiple units responded to the scene and determined the threat was not credible. However, a police officer was killed in an accident near the intersection of 30th Ave. and Washington Rd. injured and now recovering.
