South Carolina lifts Ashlyn Watkins' suspension after charges are dismissed

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina has lifted forward Ashlyn Watkins' suspension after charges of assault and kidnapping were dismissed earlier this month.

Watkins had been suspended from team activities since her arrest on Aug. 31, although she was allowed to attend classes.

The university issued a brief statement Wednesday saying, “With the dismissal of the lawsuit, South Carolina junior forward Ashlyn Watkins has returned to team activities, beginning with practice.” Court records showed that Watkins' charges were filed on November 1st was rejected.

Watkins had not worked with the team, was not part of the group that traveled to the White House in September last season to celebrate their national championship, and was not with the top-ranked Gamecocks on Monday night when they beat Michigan 68-6 in Las Vegas. 62 defeated to open the season.

Watkins is a 6-foot-3 junior who plays above her height. She led the Southeastern Conference with 91 blocks last season and scored the only two dunks in program history, one apiece as a freshman and one as a sophomore.

Watkins is expected to take over for 6-7 forward Kamilla Cardoso, the team's leading scorer and rebounder last year, who was a first-round WNBA draft pick by the Chicago Sky.

South Carolina will face No. 9 NC State on Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
