Kenosha police are asking the community for information about an alleged “suspicious person” at Roosevelt Elementary School Thursday morning, leading to a “secure lockdown” of all Kenosha Unified schools.

The KPD posted on social media that the person they were looking for was no longer at the school, but “police are actively searching for him.”

“The department is working with the Kenosha Unified School District to ensure all KUSD campuses are safe,” KPD said. “We are actively seeking to identify the individual depicted in the attached photograph. If you know this person or have seen him recently, please contact Kenosha Police at 262-656-1234.”

Kenosha Unified Schools released a statement saying the person attempted to enter the school with “suspicious bags.”

“As school personnel encountered and questioned the individual in the secured entryway, the individual fled the building into the neighborhood,” KUSD said in a prepared statement. “Under the direction of the Kenosha Police Department, all Kenosha Unified schools initiated a protective hold while KPD conducted a community-wide search.

“School continues to operate as normal in a secure space,” KUSD officials stated, “but no one can enter or exit buildings. A decision regarding dismissal and extracurricular activities has yet to be made.”

The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department and Pleasant Prairie Police have squads at all of the county's schools, Somers and Pleasant Prairie, and squads are patrolling the area to assist in the search.

Gateway Technical College in Kenosha also said it asked students to shelter in place as a precautionary response to Thursday's incident. As the company disembarked before 2:30 p.m., Gateway announced it was closing its Kenosha campus for the rest of the day out of an “abundance of caution” and had told its employees to leave for the day. All evening classes/activities at Kenosha Campus Gateway were canceled Thursday.

All other Gateway locations remained open as usual Thursday evening.
