Live updates: Trump wins election, Harris concedes

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei holds a weekly press conference in Tehran on October 28, 2024.

Iran's Foreign Ministry said Thursday that every U.S. election “provides opportunities to reconsider and reconsider unfair and inappropriate approaches,” according to state news agency IRNA.

“Our people have had very bitter experiences from previous successive American administrations,” said ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei, IRNA reported.

During his first term as president, Donald Trump significantly increased pressure on Tehran by withdrawing from a 2015 agreement to curb Iran's nuclear activities and reimposing sanctions on the country.

Baghaei added that the American people “made their choice” by electing Trump, adding that what matters to the Iranians is how Washington will behave in the future.

Other leaders: A number of other foreign officials and heads of state reacted to Trump's victory on Wednesday, often congratulating him.

Among them was Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoganwho expressed his congratulations in a phone call on Thursday. During his last presidency, Trump said he was a “big fan” of the strongman Turkish leader.

Due to its geographical location in both the Middle East and Europe, Turkey is a strategically important NATO member and the alliance's second largest military power.

On Wednesday, the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also said he looks forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump to address threats from North Korea and Russia.

Rutte praised Trump's success in encouraging other NATO member states to invest at least 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP) in defense.

Rutte said European leaders would discuss the “dangerous new developments” of cooperation between China, Russia, Iran and North Korea on Wednesday and that he looked forward to speaking to Trump about those threats.
