Elissa Slotkin wins Michigan Senate election over Mike Rogers

Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin defeated former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers in the race for Michigan's open Senate seat, NBC News predicts, a key seat in one of the most closely contested states.

Slotkin beat Rogers amid an intense presidential campaign between President-elect Donald Trump, who won Michigan, and Vice President Kamala Harris, who ran behind Slotkin.

While Michigan Democrats have lost only two Senate races in 52 years, many of those elections have been close, and recent presidential campaigns have seen a shift. Trump narrowly won there in 2016, and Joe Biden made another breakthrough in 2020.

Slotkin will replace Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a fellow Democrat who was first elected to the seat in 2000 and is retiring this year. In August, Slotkin thanked Stabenov for paving the way and making the conscious decision to “pass the torch.” The couple hugged on stage at Slotkin's watch party after she won a contested Democratic primary in August.

Slotkin, who worked at the CIA and the Department of Defense, often cites her mother's battle with ovarian cancer, which pushed her to become politically active in fighting health care costs and lowering prescription drug prices. She moved to Michigan to run for Congress in 2018 after serving in the Obama administration and narrowly winning a congressional district in central Michigan in one of the most closely contested races of the year.

Slotkin held the seat in two consecutive close elections before running for Senate this election cycle.

Rogers represented the same congressional district from 2001 to 2015 before retiring. He was previously a critic of Trump, but turned positive when he ran for Senate and received Trump's endorsement in March. Rogers appeared at a campaign stop with Trump's vice presidential running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, in Big Rapids in late August.

Trump was far from the only big name entering the Senate race. Slotkin received an endorsement in early October from former President Barack Obama, who also appeared in an ad highlighting her national security experience.
