Three games, three points: After the false start in the Champions League, only victories can help FC Bayern. After the bitter defeats against Aston Villa (0:1) and FC Barcelona (1:4), the German record champions are under pressure on the fourth matchday of the premier class. On Wednesday, November 6th, Bayern will meet Benfica Lisbon in the Allianz Arena (from 9 p.m. in LIVETICKER).

Only victories in the remaining group games of the Champions League will help FC Bayern to at least qualify in eighth place and thus directly for the round of 16. Before the match day, the Bundesliga table leaders were only in an indisputable 23rd place.

Vincent Kompany changed two positions compared to last weekend's 3-0 win against Union Berlin. Serge Gnabry and Konrad Laimer support Kingsley Coman and Raphael Guerreiro in the starting eleven. Sven Ulreich is missing from the squad for a short time and, according to Bayern, the substitute keeper is complaining of feeling unwell. Daniel Peretz and Max Schmitt sit on the bench as keepers.

Ex-Bayern professional Renato Sanches is in the starting line-up for the Portuguese.

While Bayern coach Vincent Kompany remains cool for the duel with Benfica, his stars are already putting themselves under pressure. “We just have to get points now,” demanded Thomas Müller and the Portuguese midfielder Palhinha said: “This is a final for us!” We have to get back to winning ways.”

The fact is: after only three points from three games, direct participation in the round of 16 is extremely endangered. As statisticians have calculated, Bayern need at least 13 more points to qualify directly for the round of 16 as one of the best eight teams – i.e. four wins and one draw.

The statistics against Benfica should give Bayern hope. In twelve games in European competitions, the record champions have never lost against the Portuguese (9 wins, 3 draws). On their last trip to Munich, the Portuguese suffered a 2-5 defeat in November 2021.

After coach Bruno Lage took over the team from the dismissed Roger Schmidt at the beginning of September, the Portuguese top team got back on the road to success. Most recently there were nine wins in ten games. In the Champions League, the two-time European Cup winner beat Red Star Belgrade (2:1) and Atlético Madrid (4:0), but lost to Feyenoord (1:3).
